Don't Panic, It's Lunchtime!

If you're the least bit geeky, you may be celebrating Towel Day in honour of Douglas Adams' The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy,  Geek Pride Day, as it's the anniversary of the first Star Wars film release,  the Glorious 25th of May if you're a fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld ... or maybe even all of the above :) We might be a bit geeky - so I made Sailor Boy a geeky lunch:

Sailor Boy's PlanetBox Launch contains:
  • The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything stuck in some almond butter greek yogurt dip, with honeycrisp apple wedges to dip in it.
  • Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably-Priced Love and a Hard-Boiled Egg!
  • Delicious grapes speared with lightsabers in a lilac purple cup
  • 2 slices of leftover Papa Murphy's taco pizza embellished with cheese "Don't Panic" in large, friendly letters.

I served his lunch with a gift of a new black "42" towel:

Sprout wanted her picture with the "funny little towel":

I got it from ThinkGeek, where else?

Did you made a geeky lunch today? Or some other time?

Live Long And Prosper Star Trek Lunch

I bet Spock would describe this bento as "Fascinating, but highly illogical." :)

Live Long & Prosper Vulcan salute bento lunch

Sailor Boy and I are both a little bit Trekkie, so I know he'll get a kick out of it! Inspired by the Vulcan salute, his PlanetBox lunch contains:

  • Turkey & cheddar on wheat Vulcan salute sandwich (should have skipped the turkey since Vulcans are vegetarian, but I forgot)
  • Freshly picked cherries! Sailor Boy has been looking forward to cherry season, these will be a welcome surprise :)
  • Greens salad topped with cheese "live long & prosper"
  • Gouda Babybel carved with a Starfleet Insignia
  • Mandarin & sesame dressing for the salad
  • Safeway cheddar cheese star crackers
  • Trader Joe's yogurt covered star cookies

The Vulcan salute sandwich was made using a cookie cutter & stamper from this most excellent set by ThinkGeek:

I love them!

If we can arrange for someone to stay with the younger sproutlets, Sailor Boy, Beanstalk & I will be seeing Into Darkness this weekend - I can hardly wait!

Edible Geekery : My Geeky Valentine

Bella & Pickle's Valentine's Day lunches are part of a geeky blog hop!

My Doctor Who fangirl Bella gets a Valentimey-Wimey lunch, inspired by dimension-crossed would-be lovers, the Tenth Doctor & Rose. Packed in a pink yubo lunchbox with a Valentine holiday faceplate

Rose & Ten Doctor Who Love bento

The Doctor's two hearts are represented by the two pizza biscuits, and Rose Tyler, obviously, by the ham rose :) On the side are tomatoes & Galia melon. And I couldn't resist adding a little heart-shaped marshmallow baby Adipose

Subtle Doctor Who bento
I made the pull apart heart biscuits with Pillsbury Grands cut with my FunBites Luv it! Thanks for this fantastic idea to Jenn of Bento for Kidlet - and she made her biscuit dough from scratch! After cutting them out I brushed on a little sauce & sprinkled them with mozzarella - and I love how they turned out :)

Rose, Tens two hearts, & an adipose :)

Pickle loves science and is all excited about his new science experiment kit, and hoping to take part in his school's science fair this Spring, so that's the theme for his yubo unch:

Science bento school lunch packed in yubo

Pickle's has a heart and a beaker sandwich,  peanut butter of course. The beaker has a heart cut out of the top bread, and the space filled with a layer of sugar sprinkles, a technique called "fairy bread"- isn't that cute? On the side he has a frosting-drizzled heart-shaped oatmeal bar, that he calls "mookie",  because it's texture is in between a muffin & a cookie :)

He also has yogurt with a frozen yogurt heart in the centre. It might melt by lunch but I'm hoping it will keep it's shape. And a Smarties Love Hearts candy treat. Pickle lo-o-oves Smarties, or as we call them in Canada, Rockets

Groundhog Day!

I'd never heard of Groundhog Day until I saw the Bill Murray comedy with my husband, after it came out on video. Even after that I didn't realize it was a real day! Though I now know all about the holiday-of-sorts, it's still the movie and not the weather predicting rodent that comes to mind when I hear it mentioned ... and then of course I hear the song that played every morning on the radio :)

My Punxsutawney Phil cheese sandwich predicts Spring is on the way! Above my groundhog I have some carrot sticks & a Clementine orange (sprouting Spring flowers) The main course of my lunch is chili, decorated with white cheddar words from the song that the main character of the movie Groundhog Day woke up to every morning, over and over and over... :)

Edible Geekery : Sherlock Holmes Mystery Lunch

It's Sherlock Holmes' birthday today... so I've packed Sailor Boy's Monday lunch a little early... but even if he peeks, it'll still be a bit of a mystery...

I'll give the end of this post away now, so you don't miss it... this lunch is part of a Happy Birthday Sherlock Holmes blog hop! No sneaking a peek at the next post now,  read mine first! The link to the next blog is at the end :)

Sherlock Holmes Mystery Bento Lunch

Sailor Boy's EasyLunchbox contains a "Mystery Meatball" Bento:
  • Mystery meatballs on rice, with teriyaki glaze
  • Sharp white cheddar characters
  • Fresh pineapple chunks with a heart pick
  • & a Peanut Toffee Buzz Clif Bar
How good are your bento detective skills?
There's a reason behind what's in each section of this lunch. Think you can solve the mystery meanings? Take a look, then read on to see if you're right :)

Sherlock Holmes Mystery Bento Lunch
So what's the mystery with the meatballs?

No, it's not mystery meat - they're just regular ground beef. But they're stuffed meatballs - the mystery is what's inside each one! It could be chopped bell peppers, a grape tomato, pineapple & ginger, or mozzarella cheese! And the cheese characters? Sherlock's address is 221B Baker Street.

What does pineapple have to do with Sherlock Holmes?

Nothing! But what's a mystery lunch without a nod to another couple of my favourite detectives, Shawn & Gus of Psych? My fellow Psych-os will get it :)

And of course,  you know I always put a heart in my Sailor Boy's lunch ♥

And how does the Clif bar fit in?

When my friend Karen of What's In Our Lunch Bags? suggested we make bentos for Sherlock Holmes' birthday, my first thought was,
"So, a bento made of coffee & tobacco then?"

Heh. Caffeine & nicotine was pretty much what Sherlock existed on!

This particular Clif bar is caffeinated, so I think Sherlock would approve :)

Lastly,  I packed a note from my Lunchbox Love For Loved Ones collection. There's no mystery behind why I chose this one, it's just a fact :) And one of the things I'm going to miss the most when he deploys next week :(

I'd like to thank the folks of Say Please! not only for their gift of these Lunchbox Love notes to slip into my husband's lunches when he's home & care packages when he's deployed, but also for helping to make military life a bit sweeter for all service members & their families via Treats 4 Our Troops  ♥ Visit their website www.treats4ourtroops.org/ or facebook page to learn more :)

Lunch Ahoy Sailor Boy

When I asked the husband if he wanted me to make him a special lunch, he said "No thanks, you can keep me out of your lunch shenanigans!"

I made him this anyways

Lunch Ahoy!

Pepper jack & cheddar  quesadillas on romaine lettuce, taco meatballs,
peppers, little tub of raspberry vinaigrette for the greens, spicy almonds.

The little tub holding the dressing is a mini play-doh tub!
