May The 4th Be With You Favourites!

My Star Wars fans are buying lunch at school,  but I did find a way to use one of our Star Wars food accessories... in Bella's hair ! Here are my favourite past May the 4th Be With You bentos,  & Bella's braid :)

Which is your favourite?

Here's Bella's Stormtrooper cupcake ring repurposed as hair accessory :)

Happy Star Wars Day, & May the 4th Be With You! Enjoy Your Lunch, You Will!

This past weekend Mia Bella reminded me that Monday was May the 4th. For a moment I forgot the significance, until she said "You know, May the 4th be with you?" Right! I knew that! "So will you make me a Star Wars lunch?" I said I would, & this is it, packed in her PlanetBox Rover:

I think it turned out pretty awesome! Stamping cookie cutter are the best for making a fancy looking lunch, fast. The ones I used (below) are part of a set from Williams-Sonoma that includes Darth Vader, Yoda, a Stormtrooper, & Boba Fett. They don't carry it anymore but you can still sometimes find them & similar Star Wars Press & Stamp Cookie Cutters on Amazon, or eBay.

Bella's Darth Vader & Stormtrooper sandwiches are turkey & cheddar on whole wheat & white. She has two of each, on a bed of lettuce & flanked by sweet mini peppers. The trio of Yodas are slices of honeydew melon. Dueling lightsaber cupcake picks pierce one of a bunch of grape tomatoes.

I also packed some green grapes, & carved Star Wars into the wax shell of a Babybel cheese, using a v-shaped cutter shown in the tool set below. Carving those words took me longer than it took to make the whole rest of the lunch! And for a treat, I added some "Galaxy Mix" Jelly Belly beans. Our packet had Darth Vader on it, & the beans themselves were iridescent!

I had already closed her PlanetBox & packed it in her Rover carry bag,  & was busy making the younger sproutlets' lunches, when I remembered that I had forgotten to include a Lunchbox Love note!  Caught it in time though,  & opened up her lunch to add the note. So now you get to see what her lunch looks like after the lid's been closed & it's been turned sideways :) See... nothing squashed or out of place, only the jelly beans have moved a little ;)

I also added a Star Wars print cloth napkin made by one of the biggest Star Wars nerds in the bento world as I know it, Kristie of Beneficial Bento. You can get custom cloth napkins & more in her Beneficial Bento etsy shop.

May The Fourth Be With You, Origami Yoda

I made Pickle a peanut butter sandwich inspired by one of his favourite books, The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, by Tom Angleberger:

Origami yoda bento Lunch
If you haven't read the book, you might be thinking, "That sandwich doesn't look much like Yoda." No, it doesn't. That's because it's Origami Yoda. And it does look like Origami Yoda - Pickle recognized him right away :) Here's a picture from the book:

Yoda is drawn on the sandwich with food markers. Pickle also has chunks of mozzarella with a light saber food pick for stabbing them,  Star Wars fruit snacks, & a Go-Gurt, snipped open then re-sealed with a Twix-It. This week Pickle had MSP testing so I added an encouraging Lunchbox Love note.

I also included a Star Wars print cloth napkin from Beneficial Bento on Etsy. I tried folding a cloth napkin into a yoda but that didn't work out - I couldn't even get my paper practice yoda to work out! Pickle's much better at origami & has great fun making paper creations from the Origami Yoda book series:

Check out author Tom Angleberger's website, origamiyoda.com for lots of fun, updates, & origami instructions! Pickle loves it!

May the 4th be With You

Last year Star Wars Day fell on a school day, so I made all the school age sproutlets themed lunches, but this year it's a Saturday, I don't need to pack school lunches. Instead, I packed one for Sailor Boy to take to work Monday:

May the 4th Be With You Lunch - Sarlacc Pit Bean Dip
I'm really pleased with how the refried bean dip Sarlacc pit turned out! The tentacles are shredded Monterey Jack cheese. So the bean dip could be taken out of the metal PlanetBox and microwaved, I packed it in a jumbo silicone muffin cup - they are the perfect height for the PlanetBox, the lid is flush with the rim of the cup when closed. Sailor Boy's going to love this lunch :)

The rest of his PlanetBox Launch contains:
  • A heart-shaped egg with a Stormtrooper cupcake topper
  • Salsa to go with the chips & bean dip
  • Blue corn & black bean garlic tortilla chips
  • Blueberries, some skewered on a lightsaber food pick
  • Princess Leia buns mini cinnamon buns, heheh

Edible Geekery : May The 4th Be With You! Star Wars Lunch

It's Star Wars Day!

Beanstalk's PlanetBox is packed with a lunch any Padawan would trade his food pellets for. On the Dark Side, a Darth Vader cupcake topper lurks among black grapes. On the Jedi side is a candy coated pretzel rod lightsaber. I had issues with the baking melts - it was meant to be a light coating, but it was too thick for dipping and I had to spread it on with a spatula. It ended up more candy than pretzel, hmph. Beanstalk will be thrilled with all the sugar in this lunch - may the force be with his teacher ;)

Green grapes & lightsaber cupcake picks surround an apple Yoda (thank you Kitchen Fun With My Three Sons for the recipe). I stuck a storm trooper cupcake topper in a square of Clif Z bar, & next to it are a pair of peanut butter granola squares. In the centre is a rolled piece of ham, solo.
I know, that joke was really bad... but I couldn't resist :)

Bella's not a Star Wars fan, but she wanted in on the fun (I think she just wanted the chocolate covered pretzel rod lightsaber - that I forgot to include in the pic) so I packed her potato soup in her brother's Clone Wars Thermos instead of her pink one, and added some lightsabers to her fruit & veg. The Darth Vader cupcake toppers are rings so I put her cloth napkin through one.
Can't forget Pickle! He has a Luke's right hand peanut butter sandwich ;)
And not shown, yogurt & oatmeal cookie, like every day. The lightsaber is just because I had one left. Red is his favourite colour, too.
