Bella has chicken & cheese tortilla roll-ups, some grapes, carrots, cucumber stars, fig newtons, and tomatoes. To make it a VicTORious lunch, I printed a little picture of the star of the show, attached it to a toothpick and stuck it in one of the roll-ups, along with some musical note picks. On top of the fig newtons is a sugar guitar cupcake topper.
Beanstalk requested a Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy lunch - he recently read the book and saw the movie.
I got the idea to use "So long and thanks for all the fish" from Jenn of Bento for Kidlet's last day of school lunch for her son. Beanstalk's lunch is similar, he also has a sandwich with the quote in fruit leather, goldfish crackers, and an apple. His apple has a dolphin carved into it, and he has some grapes on star picks.
"So long and thanks for all the fish" is a line from The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy - it's what the dolphins say when they leave the Earth. It was even made into a song for the opening of the 2005 movie:
Just wondering what you use to cut the shapes out of the apples? I have seen you do a checkered apple as well as cut hearts out of the skin.
ReplyDeleteFor checkered apples I make a grid with a knife then peel every other square. Bento for Kidlet has a good tutorial For most shapes, I use a cookie cutter or vegetable cutter. Some, like the metal vegetable cutters, are sharp enough to cut through the peel, and then I only have to remove the peel from within the shaped area, but some cutters aren't sharp - like the one I used here, it was a play-doh cutter - so I pressed it against the apple hard enough to leave an impression in the peel that I used as a guide to cut the shape out with a knife.
DeleteSqueee! Love the VicTORIous bento!
ReplyDeleteA Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy bento? Hilarious!!:))
ReplyDeleteJohn has a big issue with taking non-whole apples to school. If they turn even the slightest bit tan (not even full fledged brown) he won't eat any of it. Bummer because I LOVE the idea of the shapes and checkerboards!
ReplyDeleteSprout is the same way. When I send you your laminated blog post I'll add some Fruit Fresh for you to test on an apple slice and see if he will eat it. If he does, it's worth getting. I's what I sprinkle on ours (or dip them in).

ReplyDeleteLove both of these SOOO much!
ReplyDeleteLove the music picks!!
ReplyDeleteI love the dolphin in the apple. Never thought of cutting out shapes like that but then I have only just discovered the joys of fruit fresh. Happy towel day
ReplyDeleteI love the dolphin apple! And, what an awesome idea for last day of school lunch.
